What We Do

Mugenuni is a leader in sustainable sea urchin aquaculture that produces high quality Shirahige urchin for the global market as well as supplying third party urchin farms with the key technology and inputs they need to produce their own high quality urchin.
SPAT HAtchery
We supply commercial quantities of sea urchin spat to urchin farms and research institutions globally to enable their aquaculture businesses.
URCHIN DIET
We supply the same proprietary sea urchin diet used in our own farms to third party sea urchin farmers to improve their yields and quality.
Live URCHIN FARMING
Using spat from our hatchery and our proprietary diet we farm urchin in an 100% land based operation, providing all year round supply.
ROE PROCESSING
We process live urchin from our own farm, as well as partner farms, into market ready product and manage the marketing and logistics of sales.

Global demand for urchin has far exceeded the annual supply from wild-catch, with annual catches declining by more than 35% since their peak in 1995. This decline is attributed to the unsustainable over fishing by the roving fleets of fishing boats which have circled the world seeking new stocks after they have exhausted traditional fisheries.
The holy grail for sustainability of the sea urchin fishery has long been the development of an economical aquaculture solution that does not rely on wild-catch. Mugenuni have perfected proprietary technology that allows us to spawn spat and grow these into mature urchin with high yields of plump tasty roe in a 100% land based aquaculture operation.

By tightly controlling the diet and growing environment of Mugenuni urchin, we are able to reliably produce roe with optimal colour, texture and taste without the seasonal variation of wild-catch urchin.
All year reliability
Mugenuni urchins are spawned and matured all year round and are not seasonal like wild-catch urchin. This means that Mugenuni can supply your favourite urchin 52 weeks of the year.

Mugenuni are grown in a 100% land based aquaculture operation with no wild-catch component. We do not rely on the "roving bandit" fishing fleets that are decimating the global urchin fisheries.

OUR URCHINS

Mugenuni are grown in a 100% land based aquaculture operation where we spawn our own urchin larvae and grow these to mature product using proprietary technology. Mugenuni do not rely on wild-catch.
We farm a species of urchin that is native to the Japanese island of Okinawa, where it is known as Shirahige Uni. Other common names for this species include: Hawaiian Urchin, Collector Urchin and White Beard Urchin. The taste of this urchin has been described as having the “sweetness” of lobster and the “ocean” of an oyster.
